We’ve watched Making You Content grow from freelance roots to become a respected copywriting agency in Manchester. Here, Director Kelly Gilmour-Grassam explains how Nabarro Poole has supported her journey and helped her drive business growth…
I fell into freelancing straight out of university. While I had always excelled as a writer, I had next to no commercial experience – let alone the skills critical to running a business.
As my client base grew, and with it my earnings and outgoings, I quickly realised that I’d need extra support to stay on top of my finances. After asking around for accountants in Manchester, I was introduced to Tyler from Nabarro Poole by a friend.
Starting from scratch
Tyler told me more about their service over a coffee and was sensitive to the fact that I was a one-woman band. He asked how I’d been collecting my records to date, and it quickly became apparent that there was a lot of work to do.
Nevertheless, Tyler came back with a really reasonable quote for collating and submitting my Self Assessment tax return, and offered plenty of advice to help me reduce future bills through improved record-keeping moving forward.
Growing together
Nabarro Poole has been my accountant ever since. It didn’t take long for my business to grow to a point where I incorporated Making You Content as a limited company, and soon began taking on staff too.
As I grew, Nabarro Poole’s service evolved to keep pace. We eventually shifted to a plan that allowed for ongoing support throughout the year – management account, payroll support, corporation tax and VAT returns – all at a price that was reflective of the fact I was still very much a small business.
During that time, I’ve also brought in a bookkeeper. She works closely alongside Tyler to ensure that we are building a profitable, resilient agency model with a tight grip on cash flow.
Always improving
I was advised that, as my business grew, I would outgrow my accountant. However, that simply hasn’t been the case.
Tyler and his team are extremely responsive to my queries – which range from silly questions to complex requests – and are always looking to support my business in making finance easier to manage and more watertight.
